In Macomb County schools, scores rose with between 40.5 percent and 61.3 percent passing on writing, math and reading. Scores dropped in the area of science, with 54.3 percent passing, as well as social studies, with 79.8 percent passing.

Richmond Community Schools had the highest increase in math scores -- a jump of 15.4 percentage points -- to 60.7 percent passing.

Superintendent Patrick Bird attributes the improvement to an increased focus on algebra, reading and writing.

"It's unique to be able to raise your scores from year to year in every category, which we were able to do," he said. "We have focused on reading and writing over the curriculum over the past few years. We did implement algebra as the staple course in the eighth grade. It has been a challenging transition, but I believe it has helped us be able to prepare our students to be prepared for the math portion they have to take
