Richmond upends top-ranked team

GROSSE POINTE WOODS - Richmond's "B" team had reason to celebrate Saturday afternoon at Grosse Pointe North.

But it had nothing to do with how the Blue Devils finished at the Macomb County Wrestling Invitational.

The Blue Devils' "backup squad" had just gotten word that the "A" team just beating the No. 1-ranked team in the state in Division 3, Saginaw Swan Valley.

"We're in good position to get the No. 1 seed now," said Richmond co-coach Brandon Day, who took the Blue Devils' "B" team to compete at the county meet. "I'm sure that's going to put a big target on our backs now."

And Richmond, which entered the team dual-meet tournament ranked second in Division 3, did it in convincing fashion, beating SSV 52-22.

The Blue Devils got to the tournament's championship match after beating Greenville, 33-21. The Yellow Jackets are ranked second in the state in Division 2.

"Our kids have been working really, really hard and have wanted to wrestle these guys," Day said. "They wanted to wrestle these guys. Hopefully we can learn on the things we did wrong and improve on the things we did right and get ourselves in a position to finish first when it really counts at the end of the year."

What got things going for the Blue Devils took place at 119 pounds when junior Casey Martin pinned three-time defending state champ B.J. Suitor, catching him in a headlock.

"He had him on his back for well over a minute," co-coach George Hamblin said. "He locked it up. That fired us up, especially after we got pinned in the first match. It really swung the momentum in our favor."

The Blue Devils (16-0 overall) also defeated Swan Valley All-Stars 84-0, Cass City 68-6 and Hemlock 76-0.

Several Richmond wrestlers went 5-0: Nate Henke (103), Martin (119), Josh Rivard (130), Brian Henke (140), Dakota Boldrey (171) and Greg Sebastian (215).

In addition, the Blue Devils' Adrian Morang went 4-0 at 152 pounds, and Josh Younk went 3-0 at 285.

Dominic Cattera (112), Justin Russo (125) and Preston Treend (135) all went 4-1 for Richmond.

The Blue Devils, who also beat previously No. 2 ranked Dundee, made the trek to Saginaw because they didn't think they were going to see the Vikings at the Stevensville Lakeshore tournament.

However, that's not going to be the case.

Richmond is in the same pool with SSV, along with Lowell and the host Lancers.

"We didn't know we were going to see them at that tournament," Hamblin said. "When beat Dundee we asked the kids what they wanted to do and they all said they wanted to face them this weekend.

"We never get too high with our highs or to low with our lows," Hamblin added. "We didn't expect the score to be like that, but we went there with the intention of winning.

Richmond is 16-0 overall and will compete in the Lowell Dual-Meet Tournament on Dec. 29.

"It's a nice win but we're back to work Monday," Hamblin said.
