CAPAC — The Richmond wrestling team captured its six consecutive Blue Water Area Conference dual-meet league championship Wednesday after winning a pair of matches at Capac.

Entering the day, both Richmond and Capac were undefeated in the BWAC. But Richmond defeated Capac 51-18 to clinch the BWAC championship.

Richmond won all of the matches, expect for three voids in the 189-, 215- and 285-pound divisions.

“I thought we wrestled really good on the bottom,” Richmond Coach George Hamblin said. “We were a little shorthanded at the top. We have a couple of injuries, but I thought we performed pretty good.”

Among the notable matches in the contest, Sean Clancy (140) of Richmond decisioned Joshua Kaiser 6-2 and Brian Henke (145) major decisioned Brian Kulman 14-4.

“Richmond is pretty tough,” Capac Coach Jason Klink said. “The kids wrestled hard, we had some close matches against some of their quality kids. Some of the matches were some of our young guys.

“We are definitely improving. Hopefully we can improve in the next couple of weeks and hit our stride when we are supposed to be.”

Richmond (7-0, 41-4) also defeated L’Anse Creuse North 58-12. In the match, Casey Martin (125) pinned Chris Truba at 2:25 to claim his 100th career win.

Capac (6-1, 35-6) bounced back from its loss to defeat Mayville 70-6.

Up next for both teams is the BWAC individual league championships on Saturday at Croswell-Lexington.

“I think we are wrestling well,” Klink said. “The kids are coming along. We just have to improve every time out and keep battling no matter what the score is.”
