Devils send 13 to state

Richmond set a school record Saturday, advancing 13 wrestlers to the Division 3 state tournament.

The No. 2 Blue Devils had six regional champions in their home gym, while competing against a field that featured five other ranked teams.

The individual state finals for all divisions are March 4, 5 and 6 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

"We were hoping that every single kid would make it out quite frankly," said George Hamblin, who co-coaches the Blue Devils with Brandon Day. "After we had challenge matches and everyone was determined, Brandon and I felt comfortable that every single one of them had a shot to make it out."

The one who didn't was sophomore 189-pounder Greg Sebastian, who injury defaulted a match away from qualifying because he didn't want to further injure himself for the team state finals Feb. 26 and 27.

"The thing that impressed me the most was the unselfishness of Greg Sebastian," Day said. "To me, I think our wrestling community gained a lot of respect for that kid."

Stephen Ireland (103), Dominic Cattera (112), Justin Russo (125), Brian Henke (145), Roger Crump (160) and Dakota Boldrey (171), all won regional championships.

Henke, who dominated a very dificult weight class, and Ireland remain undefeated on the season.

Dustin Pitcel (112), Josh Rivard (119), Patrick Baruth (130), Preston Treend (135) and Adrian Morang (152) each placed second. Garett Edwards (119) and Casey Martin (125), each placed fourth. Both Edwards (Swan Valley's B.J. Suitor) and Martin (Montrose's Cody Wray) had to defeat a defending state champion to qualify. Suitor was a three-time champion.

Capac had four qualifiers, led by Thomas Bolday, who avenged a loss to Yale's Mike Tyranski to win the 189-pound class.

Brian Kulman (145), Ed Niemi (171) and Pat White (285) all placed fourth for the Chiefs.

Yale's Steve Lams placed second at 285 to join Tyranski as a state qualifier.

In Division 1, Port Huron Northern had four qualifiers, including two champions. Camden Sebring (125) and Austin Pickering (189) each placed first for the Huskies at Rochester, while Spencer Olson (135) was third and Chad Hughes (145) was fourth.

Sebring is making his second straight trip the state finals after placing seventh a year. The other three are making their first trips.

Marysville's Drew Saunders (171) placed second in the Division 2 regional at Warren Fitzgerald to qualify for the state meet. His teammate, DeShaun Lee (285) was third. It's the first trip for both wrestlers.

Memphis' Sean Lemerise was second at 145 in the Division 4 regional at New Lothrop. He is also making his first trip to the state finals.
