AUBURN HILLS -- Nine of Richmond's 13 wrestlers picked up first-round wins Thursday in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 individual state finals.

The tournament continues today and Saturday at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The Blue Devils are coming off a one-point victory Saturday against Dundee to claim the Division 3 team state title at the Kellogg Center in Battle Creek.

Dustin Pitcel and Dom Cattera earned 10-4 and 14-0 decisions, respectively, at 112 pounds. Casey Martin pinned his opponent at 5:36 in a 125-pound match, while Justin Russo earned a pin at 3:25 in the same weight class.

Winning by decisions were Stephen Ireland (103), Preston Treend (135), Brian Henke (145), Adrian Morang (152) and Roger Crump (160).

Josh Rivard (119), Garett Edwards (119), Pat Baruth (130) and Dakota Boldrey (171) suffered losses.

Also in Division 3, Capac's Thomas Bolday (189) recorded a pin at 3:58, while Brian Kulman (145) and Ed Niemi (171) lost on decisions.

Yale's Steve Lams (285) opened with a 5-2 victory, while Mike Tyranski (189) dropped a 6-5 decision.

In Division 1, Port Huron Northern's Cam Sebring picked up a 5-1 decision at 125. Austin Pickering cruised to an 11-3 win at 189 pounds.

"Cam and Austin came out and wrestled well," Northern Coach Ken Meinhart said. "Cam wrestled strong. He knew what he had to do and went out and did it.

"Austin was overwhelming against the wrestler he went against."

The Huskies' Spencer Olson (135) and Chad Hughes (145) were knocked into the loser's bracket.

"I think nerves got to Olson and Hughes," Meinhart said. "You look around and it's pretty impressive with the big building. Hopefully, they can settle down and bounce back on Friday."

In Division 2, Marysville's Deshaun Lee (285) fell 6-4 and Drew Saunders (171) suffered a 7-6 setback.

Memphis' Sean LeMerise (145) moved on to the second round of the Division 4 event with a forfeit.
